Roman Republic, Julius Caesar, AR Denarius, Military mint travelling with Caesar in North Africa, struck April-August 49 BC, elephant advancing right, trampling horned serpent, countermarked to elephant’s shoulder, CAESAR in exergue, rev. emblems of the pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, securis, and apex, 3.72g (Crawford 443/1; RBW 1557; RSC 49),slightly granular surfaces, very fine, toned.
